The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced the commencement of registration for Grade 10 learners on the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal following the closure of registration for Senior School assessment centres.
In a notice on June 24, KNEC said all registered assessment centres have been enabled to register Grade 10 learners for School-Based Assessment (SBA) through the CBA portal.
“Following the closure of registration of Senior School assessment centres, KNEC wishes to bring the following to the attention of Principals: registered centres have been enabled to register Grade 10 learners on the portal for School-Based Assessment (SBA),” stated the examination council.
KNEC Opens Grade 10 Learner Registration on CBA Portal
Principals have been directed to access the portal via https://cba.knec.ac.ke and use the new universal centre code generated from the Senior School portal during the registration of assessment centres.
The code will serve as both the username and the password for logging in to the CBA portal.

Once logged in, principals are required to register all Grade 10 learners on the platform within the stipulated period.
KNEC further noted that the registration exercise will close on July 30, urging schools to complete the process before the deadline to avoid inconveniences.
According to the council, the registration forms part of preparations for the implementation and administration of assessments under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework as learners transition through senior school.

The online registration process was a critical requirement in the rollout of the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) system, which is aligned with the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework.
The directive formed part of efforts to standardize and streamline the transition to the new Senior School structure, in which only properly registered institutions were allowed to enroll learners in the national assessment system.
According to KNEC, principals were required to complete the registration process within the specified timeline to ensure their schools were fully integrated into the national assessment framework.
The examination council instructed school heads to access the registration system through the official portal, where they submitted institutional details.
Schools were required to log in using their current school codes, which served as both the username and password, before proceeding with the registration process.
Upon initial access, principals were required to update their official phone numbers. These numbers were used to generate a One-Time Password (OTP) for secure verification.
The OTP ensured that only authorized school administrators could access and complete the registration process.
Schools were to enter their institutional details and upload the required documents, including the school registration certificate. The system then processed the submitted information and generated a Universal Centre Code for each institution.
