Safaricom has issued an explanation on how customers who had stopped using their old mobile lines can recreate eligible inactive numbers from the comfort of their homes before the numbers are recycled.

The service, known as Recreate Old SIM, lets customers restore an old inactive line that hasn’t been recycled yet using an active Safaricom number.

According to Safaricom, customers can access the service by dialing *100*2# from an active number, selecting SIM Card Issues, and then Recreate Old SIM.

“You can quickly reactivate your old, inactive Safaricom line right from home by dialing *100*2# on an active Safaricom line and following the prompts to recreate the old SIM, provided you still have the old SIM’s serial number,” Safaricom said.

Alternatively, customers can access the service through *456#, then select What’s New and Recreate Old SIM.

After successfully recreating the line, customers must top up within seven days to keep the number active and continue using Safaricom services.

The service is useful for customers who stopped using a number for some time but want to retain it rather than purchase a new line.

A customer who stops making calls, sending messages, using data, topping up airtime or carrying out M-Pesa transactions may eventually find that the line is no longer active.

What Customers Need

Safaricom says customers seeking to recover an eligible old line can start the process by using an active Safaricom line.

Customers using the self-service option need the serial number of the old SIM card.

Those who no longer have the old SIM serial number must visit a Safaricom Retail Shop for assistance.

The service also applies to normal Safaricom lines. Customers seeking to recreate a golden number or company line must visit a Safaricom Retail Shop to make the request.

Safaricom customers roaming outside the country cannot use the standard self-service option.

Instead, they can request assistance by emailing [email protected] or [email protected] and providing a scanned copy of their ID or passport.

Idle Lines Cannot Be Recreated

However, not every inactive number can be restored.

Safaricom states that customers cannot recreate an idle line through the service. Customers with such lines must instead purchase a new number from a Safaricom Retail Shop or M-PESA agent.

The company also limits customers to recreating two inactive lines within 72 hours.

What to do After Recreating the Line

Customers who successfully recreate their old number but cannot make or receive calls are advised to top up the line.

They should also use the line through services such as calls, SMS, data, or M-Pesa to keep it active.

Safaricom’s service is intended to give customers a way of recovering eligible inactive numbers before they are recycled, while allowing the recreation process to be initiated without visiting a retail shop.
