Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has pledged to donate Ksh2 million to the Kenya Red Cross Society to boost the ongoing relief efforts and help families affected by the ravaging floods.
In a statement by the Office of the former President, Uhuru said he will personally donate the amount as a show of compassion and support.
“In a compassionate and supportive gesture, Kenyatta has pledged a personal donation of Ksh 2 million to the Kenya Red Cross Society,” the statement read in part.
Uhuru called for unity in facing the adversities caused by the ravaging floods in parts of the country noting, “As a nation, we must stand together in the face of adversity, demonstrating compassion, resilience, and solidarity with one another.”
He also lamented the damage caused by the floods on infrastructure and the lives lost to since the onset of the rains in March and urged citizens to unite in providing support and assistance wherever possible.

“The relentless rainfall has caused significant damage, displacing families, destroying infrastructure, and claiming precious lives. During this time of profound loss and despair, my thoughts and prayers are with the affected communities as they cope with the aftermath of this natural disaster,” said the former Head of State.

Additionally, he emphasized the need for all Kenyans to remain vigilant and cautious amidst the dangers posed by flooding and urged citizens to exercise utmost care, avoid crossing flooded roads or pathways, and, most importantly, seek higher ground when necessary to ensure their safety and well-being.
Uhuru comments on doctors’ strike
Regarding the ongoing doctors’ strike in the country, Uhuru urged volunteer medical professionals and healthcare providers to step forward and assist the sick and injured. He also acknowledged the dedication and commitment of all healthcare workers and called for dialogue and meaningful engagement to resolve the ongoing stalemate.
“Together, let us navigate through these difficult times, emerging stronger, more resilient, and more united than ever before,” said Kenyatta.
His statement came on the back of devastating news in the country about the effects of floods and heavy rains that have pounded different parts of the country.
On Monday, April 29, the country woke to the news about massive destruction and loss of lives in the Mai Mahiu area of Nakuru County after a reservoir burst and washed an entire village away.

Residents in Mathioya, Murang’a County also woke up to the devastating news where members of a family were killed after a mudslide.
In other parts of the country, multiple deaths have been reported with the government figures showing that the death toll had surpassed 100. Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Monday, April 29 put the death toll at over 300.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto convened a meeting with members of the cabinet on Tuesday morning to deliberate the effects of floods.
The Ministry of Education also on Monday announced extension of school reopening dates to Monday, May 6, painting a picture of the disruptions caused by the heavy rains.
In recent forecast reports, the Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of more ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall as it predicted continuation of the torrential rains wreaking havoc across the country.
