Azimio la Umoja Coalition has returned to active politics after a leadership shake-up led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on February 2, 2026.
The coalition named Kalonzo Musyoka as Party Leader, Caroli Omondi as Secretary‑General, and Philip Kisia as Executive Director. The decisions have since been sent to the Registrar of Political Parties.
The leadership reset is Azimio’s first formal reorganisation since Raila Odinga’s death in October 2025, and it restores a working command structure under Uhuru Kenyatta’s chairmanship.
Azimio Makes Comeback
The Azimio la Umoja officials have described the changes as a bid to “reposition and revitalise” the Coalition for the next phase of national engagement.
Reports that former president Uhuru Kenyatta is backing Kalonzo Musyoka have since gained weight, after Azimio la Umoja formally installed the Wiper leader as the coalition’s Party Leader.
While Uhuru has avoided an outright public endorsement of a 2027 presidential candidate, the decision to elevate Kalonzo to the top Azimio position places him at the centre of opposition politics.
Within Azimio, the party leader’s role carries political authority and visibility, making Kalonzo the face of the coalition’s revival as succession talks intensify.
By backing Kalonzo through party structures rather than campaign declarations, the former president keeps the opposition intact while allowing room for negotiations with other key figures.

Uhuru’s recent public position has reinforced the message, with the former president urging restraint among Jubilee leaders, discouraging personal attacks, and emphasising unity among all members, positions that align closely with Kalonzo’s call for a broad opposition front.
The Matiang’i Factor
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i remains a key variable in Jubilee’s thinking as Azimio rebuilds under Uhuru Kenyatta.
While the coalition has elevated Kalonzo Musyoka as party leader, Jubilee has not shut the door on Matiang’i, who still commands support within sections of the party and among voters who credit him with a tough record in security and administration.
One scenario gaining quiet attention is Matiang’i as a possible running mate. Supporters argue that pairing him with a flagbearer such as Kalonzo would balance experience, regional appeal and administrative credentials.

Earlier on October 10, 2025, during the Wiper National Delegates Conference (NDC) held at Uhuru Park, Matiang’i signalled his readiness to rally behind Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka should the opposition unite and endorse him as their presidential flagbearer in the 2027 General Election.
“We have agreed we must put ambition and everything else before the interest of this country. When we sit together and the united opposition decides that you (Kalonzo) will be the candidate, I will support you, and we will support you,” Matiang’i said during the event.
Is Uhuru locking out Ruto from Mt Kenya?
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is not openly calling on Mt Kenya voters to abandon President William Ruto, but his recent political moves are steadily narrowing Ruto’s room for manoeuvre in the region and turning what was once a stronghold into contested ground.
Since late 2025 and into early 2026, Uhuru has softened his political tone toward former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua and warned Jubilee leaders against attacking him.
This restraint has reduced open hostilities in Mt Kenya politics and created space for tactical cooperation among Ruto critics without announcing a formal alliance.
This gives Uhuru leverage over regional narratives and candidate selection ahead of 2027, making it harder for Ruto to treat the region as a guaranteed bloc.
