Friday December 8, 2023, was meant to be a joyous and good day for Nakuru couple, Joy Chebii and her husband Benson Langat, as they headed to a bank in Nakuru County to withdraw Ksh 700,000.
This money was meant to facilitate the purchase of construction materials for their rental houses in Rongai, Nakuru County.
The construction of these rental houses had been a dream that they had shared for a long time.
However, nothing could have prepared them for the unprecedent happenings that followed them upon making the bank withdrawal.
Benson Langat and Joy Chebii managed to withdraw the lumpsum in the afternoon, due to the long lines at the bank.
“We withdrew money around 1pm because the queue was a bit long. We checked the vehicles; it wasn’t too fully packed, so I suggested that instead of waiting, let’s go and board another matatu,” Joy Chebii narrated.
After withdrawing the lumpsum, the couple lugged the cash around with them opting to get their lunch at a nearby restaurant.
The cash had been divided into two, Chebii carried the bigger portion of the money in a handbag while her husband carried Ksh 10,000 in his pocket.
After having their lunch, they exited the eatery heading directly towards the bus stage where they boarded a matatu.

However, after getting to Sobea junction, the two lovebirds alighted the matatu, switching to a boda boda.
The Attack on the Nakuru Couple
Unbeknownst to them, they were giving their to-be assailants advantage with this move. Three kilometers from the Sobea junction, a Toyota Prado approached them, blocking their way.
“We came about 3km from Sobea when a car approached us from the front, and they said, ‘Get off!’ Chebii stated, further painting a picture of the strange events.
The two alighted the boda boda, fearing for their lives after seeing that the assailants had firearms.
“They told us to lie down, threatening to kill us. I asked, “Why do you want to kill us?” and they had guns. There were around five people. Consequently, my husband was forced into the car,” Joy Chebii further narrated.
On the precision of the attack, police theorize that the robbers had trailed the two from the bank.
Additionally, authorities speculate that the robbers had prior information on the couple’s plans for the day, including the amount of money that they had planned to withdraw.
Joy Chebii told police that one of the gunmen took her handbag and whisked away her husband who had submitted.
Benson Langat Gives His Side of the Story
Further, Benson Langat narrated his version of events, saying that he was pushed and slapped once by the robbers as they made him sit inside the car and drove off.

The robbers, in a bid to cover up their identities to Benson, put a sack over his head, all the while threatening to kill him.
They later dumped him into a pit, leaving him with a mere Kshs 2,000 in his pocket. The couple reported the event immediately to Menengai police station.
Rongai OCPD, Wilberforce Sicharani, while confirming the report advised members of the public to avoid carrying large sums of money in bulk or using bags.
Nonetheless, detectives are still probing the case and the suspects are yet to be apprehended.
