Women’s fashion in Kenya is changing, with trends diversifying from earlier ones and incorporating a range of innovations and ideas.
In 2026, women’s fashion trends are more centered on upcycled denim, contemporary Kitenge styles, soft tailoring, wide-leg trousers, oversized silhouettes, and thrift-inspired fashion trends.
Nairobi Fashion Week 2026, held from January 28 to 31, showcased trends in upcycled textiles, reworked denim, slow fashion, and responsible production.
Under the theme ‘Decarbonize,’ the event was based on sustainability, heritage, and commerce in the fashion sector.
The event featured both Kenyan and international designers who worked on trends that challenge the normalcy of the traditional African designs.
“When you talk about decarbonization, a lot of people think about fossil fuels, but fashion is the second emitter of global carbon emissions. So, we must think about it critically and see how we can address it,” said Brian Kihinda, founder of the Kenya Fashion Council, during the Nairobi Fashion Week 2026.
2026 Fashion Trends
Through fashion showcases and events, women in 2026 have moved toward styles featuring adaptable pieces that are both budget-friendly and trendy.
Current fashion trends include tailored blazers, soft suits, wide-leg trousers, thrifted and upcycled denim, and reworked skirts.
In addition, some have ventured into the fashion trends of locally made prints and kitenge-inspired outfits.
As the fashion industry evolves to incorporate Western culture, current fashion trends blend modern outfits with African crafts.
Unlike in the early days, when fashion was traditionally concentrated, in 2026 the fashion design is a blend of contemporary fashion and heritage.

Fashion Shift
Coverage from the Nairobi Fashion Week 2026 revealed that both men and women have shifted to using designs from the thrift and resale sector.
Designers are currently working on creating clothing lines and designs from discarded textiles, flea-market sourcing, wholesalers, and recycled fabrics.
Following the shift in fashion design, mitumba and upcycled fashion are now among the top fashion trends as part of a budget-friendly style movement.
Further, color and silhouette fashion trends are currently on the rise, moving towards functional yet expressive dressing.
According to reports on Kenyan street style, fashion currently involves a blend of soft tailoring, bold colors, oversized denim, and vintage shirts.
However, the reports also revealed that camera-ready outfits are still in the fashion sector, although not as prominent as earlier.
Fashion trends across various regions in the country show that the Kenyan women are shifting towards clothes that are stylish, sustainable, and versatile.
The current trend is based more on pieces that are not luxury and overly formal, in the industry that promotes circular design, renewable use, and eco-friendly trends.
