UNESCO’s General Conference declared February 13 World Radio Day in 2011. February 13 is the anniversary of the founding of United Nations Radio, the UN’s international broadcasting service, which was established on this date in 1946 by UNESCO’s Director-General.
This year’s theme is “Radio and Peace” highlighting the importance of radio in maintaining peace and preventing conflicts as a mode of communication.

Today, many radio stations have online streaming services, allowing people to listen to their favorite stations from anywhere in the world. Radio has also adapted to modern technology, with many stations using social media to engage with their listeners and share content.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is one of the main sponsors of World Radio Day. The organization has published a guidebook on using community radio for peacebuilding and conflict resolution, as well as a collection of case studies highlighting the impact of radio in promoting peace and dialogue.
Several other media houses, NGOs, and organizations such as the Common Ground, an international NGO that works on conflict transformation and peacebuilding, have sent out messages highlighting the importance of the medium in peace keeping.
