Lucy Kambuni is a highly distinguished Kenyan legal professional and Senior Counsel with over 35 years of experience in constitutional, commercial, and international law.

 She is widely recognized for her leadership in the Kenyan legal fraternity and her contributions to international judicial systems.

In 2012, Lucy Muthoni Kambuni was conferred the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel (SC) by the President of Kenya for her exemplary service to the legal and public sectors.

ICC Advisory Role- In 2018, she was elected to the Advisory Committee on Nominations (ACN) for judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

Kambuni became the first woman Vice-Chairperson of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) IN 2005.

Lucy has served on critical national bodies, including the Kriegler Commission, serving in the Independent Review Commission in 2008, which investigated the 2007 General Elections.

Early Life and Educational Background

Lucy Muthoni Kambuni, SC, was born on January 17, 1961, in Kenya.

She attended Alliance Girls’ High School in Kenya for her secondary and advanced-level education, completing her O-levels between 1974 and 1977 with a division 1, earning 13 points.

Between 1978 and 1979, she pursued A-level education, achieving three principal subjects and one subsidiary, amassing 16 points.

From 1980 to 1984, she was at the University of Nairobi, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) with Second Class Honours, Upper Division.

In 1985, at the Kenya School of Law, she obtained a Diploma Certificate in Law.

The senior counsel completed professional training at the renowned firm Kaplan & Stratton Advocates in Nairobi, between 1984 and 1985.

Kambuni earned a Master of Laws (LLM) in Public International Law from the University of Nairobi from 2003 to 2005.

Her studies included specialized units in International Criminal Law, International Human Rights Law, and International Litigation.

Lucy Kambuni’s Career Background

Since 2006, she has been the founder and Sole Proprietor of L.M. Kambuni & Associates in Nairobi, specializing in commercial, constitutional, and international law.

Before founding her current firm, she was a Partner at Kambuni & Githae Advocates for 15 years, between 1991 and 2006.

She began her career between 1985 and 1991 at one of Kenya’s oldest firms, Kaplan & Stratton Advocates, working in the Litigation Department immediately after being admitted as an Advocate of the High Court.

Since 2018, she has been elected by the Assembly of States Parties at The Hague to the Advisory Committee on Nominations (ACN) for judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC)

In recognition of her service, she was awarded the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS) by the President of Kenya in 2019.

In 2019, she was the Vice-Chairperson of the Tribunal investigating the conduct of several High Court and Environment judges.

Lucy Kambuni was the Lead Assisting Counsel for the Commission of Inquiry into the petition to suspend the Makueni County Government in 2015.

She shared her expertise as a lecturer in Trial Advocacy and Professional Ethics at the Kenya School of Law from 2007 to 2012, and at Kenyatta University from 2008 to 2011.

Kambuni served as the first woman Vice-Chairperson between 2004 and 2005 and was inducted into the LSK Roll of Honour in 2019.

Muthoni is a founding member of the regional bar association, East Africa Law Society (EALS), established in 1995.
