The government is implementing the Shauri Moyo B Affordable Housing Project (AHP) as a strategic development within Nairobi County’s Makadara Constituency.

The project site is located approximately 300 meters off Jogoo Road and at the gateway to the Eastleigh suburbs.

It previously comprised 299 ancient design single-storey houses with mainly single and double room dwellings and communal ablution facilities.

According to the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, the transformation of the area into a modern, mixed-use development demonstrates the government’s dedication to upgrading Kenya’s housing stock while creating vibrant, sustainable communities.

The Shauri Moyo B development complements a similar AHP redevelopment project (Shauri Moyo A) located on the opposite side of Mohammed Yusuf Avenue.

It has a capacity of 4,566 residential units and commercial components

The contract period is 24 months, and the project is 12 percent complete.

Features of the Affordable Housing Project in Shauri B

The Shauri Moyo B Affordable Housing Project is designed as a comprehensive mixed-use development that combines residential and commercial spaces with community amenities.

It delivers a diverse range of housing options across three phases with 22 blocks together with integrated affordable, social, and market rate housing units.

Also worth noting is the commercial and community component of this mixed-use development, which includes a mall facility and retail shops totaling 6,800 square meters.

The project will also have a hospital structure with a parking and a kindergarten facility of 886.42 square metres.

It will also feature a silo parking with 21,534.27 square metres and a xlub house (1,350 sq.m)

The development incorporates essential infrastructure, including:

  • Street lighting for security and accessibility.
  • Civil works include driveways, parking, drainage, and sewer collection networks.
  • Water storage tanks for consistent water supply.
  •  Solid waste management facilities.
  • Power supply infrastructure.
  • Landscaping and grounds work to create an attractive living environment.

Economic Impact

The Shauri Moyo B AHP will provide direct employment creation for over 1,000 youth in both low and high-skilled positions throughout the development phase.

It will also create indirect jobs through the supply of goods and services to the construction site.

Jua Kali artisans will be engaged for the supply of doors, windows, and wooden fittings.

Besides, it will enhance skills development through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for workers, facilitated by linkages with nearby TTIs, TVCs, TVETs, and the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).

It will provide long-term employment opportunities in estate management, maintenance, security, and commercial operations.

The project will also stimulate infrastructure investment in the neighborhood, including expanded sewer and water lines.

Additionally, it will enhance educational infrastructure through the construction of additional classrooms in neighboring schools.

This project will improve healthcare access through the construction of a hospital and commercial activity through the development of a mall.
