The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has appointed a new Chief Executive Officer following the resignation of Barry Otieno who officially resigned from his position after five years.
Otieno announced about his resignation in a letter dated October 8, 2024, addressed to the FKF President Nick Mwendwa, delegates and staff.
Following his resignation, FKF in a letter named Patrick Korir as the Interim CEO, effective immediately.
The federation while announcing Korir as its new boss said that he brings a wealth of experience in Kenyan football.
“In response to this development, FKF has swiftly appointed Patrick Korir as the Interim CEO, effective immediately. Patrick brings a wealth of experience in Kenyan football, having served as a journalist, football coordinator, and, most recently, as the CEO of Nairobi City Stars,” the statement reads in part.
“His in- depth understanding of the sport, combined with his management expertise, ensures he will quickly integrate into his new role, minimizing any disruption to FKF’s operations.”
FKF has maintained that it believes Patrick Korir will play a pivotal role in this transition and help steer the Federation toward even greater success.
Korir’s appointment comes following the resignation of outgoing CEO Otieno who in a letter said that it has been an honor to serve in the position since 2019, working alongside dedicated professionals and passionate football enthusiasts.
He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all the football stakeholders who have supported him throughout his tenure.
“I am writing to formally announce my resignation as the General Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), effective today October 8, 2024. After five years of serving in this esteemed position, I have decided to step down and pursue other opportunities,” said Otieno in the letter.

He added, “I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the football stakeholders who have supported me throughout my tenure. To the FKF President, thank you for your unwavering support and guidance. Your vision for Kenyan football has been inspirational, and it has been a privilege to work alongside you in realizing those goals.”
Otieno was appointed CEO following the resignation of his predecessor, Robert Muthomi, who stepped down amid a transfer controversy involving former FKF Premier league side Sofapaka’s striker John Avire.
In the letter, the outgoing CEO said that his journey with FKF has been both rewarding and transformative.
He further highlighted that he began as the Communications Manager from 2016 to 2017, before progressing to assume the role of Head of Communications and Marketing from 2017 to 2019.

Otieno at the same time said that as he prepares to hand over his responsibilities, he is confident that the federation is well-positioned for continued success.
“I remain committed to ensuring a smooth transition and will be available to assist in any way during this process. It has been a privilege to serve Kenyan football, and I will always cherish the memories and experiences gained during my time at FKF. I look forward to witnessing the continued growth and success of football in Kenya,” he added.
Presidential elections
The Federation has expressed its sincere gratitude for the outgoing CEO’s contributions and wished him all the best in his future endeavors.
Further, FKF highlighted that Barry will work closely with the federation’s team to ensure a smooth and seamless transition of leadership, guaranteeing that ongoing projects and key activities continue without interruption during this period of change.
Otieno’s resignation comes at a pivotal time as FKF President Nick Mwendwa is intensifying his efforts to secure support for a controversial third term in the forthcoming elections.

Mwendwa recently held a meeting with branch officials from 48 counties, a gathering which conspicuously lacked Otieno’s presence, further fueling speculation about the latter’s next move.
Mwendwa is also planning additional meetings with club officials in the coming weeks to strengthen his position ahead of the December 7 national election.
During his tenure, Otieno has been a key figure in Mwendwa’s administration and a trusted confidant of the current FKF President.
Should the outgoing CEO decide to run for the top post, he would join an already crowded field of candidates, including Extreme Sports Chief Executive Officer Hussein Mohammed and former FKF president Sam Nyamweya.
Also, Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino, Tom Alila, and Sammy Ocholla, have all declared their intentions to contest.
The FKF elections are set to begin at the branch level on November 9, culminating in the national elections on December 7.
Meanwhile, the Federation has assured stakeholders that all scheduled activities and programs will proceed as planned.
