Kenya Met Department Releases Weather Forecast for the Last Week of 2024

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has shared a 5-day weather forecast for the period between December 28, 2024, and January 1, 2025.

In the forecast published on December 27, Kenya Met highlighted areas that will receive rainfall during this period.

“Occasional rainfall is anticipated in some areas within the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley as well as the Southeastern Lowlands,” the statement read.

According to Kenya Met some areas are likely to receive showers and thunderstorms.

Kenya Met Dry Weather conditions expected in most parts of the country

Additionally, dry weather conditions are expected in most parts of the country and strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) are expected in parts of Turkana and Marsabit counties.

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley will experience rains over a few places in the mornings with sunny intervals dominating in the afternoon except on January 1, 2025, where it is expected that these regions will experience showers and thunderstorms.

Nights in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the weatherman adds, will be partly cloudy.

Counties in these regions include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

The minimum temperature will be 09°C.

North-western region, which includes Turkana and Samburu Counties, will experience sunny intervals in the morning and afternoons. The nights will be partly cloudy.

According to Kenya Met, the temperature will range between 09°C and 36°C in these counties. 

Nairobi and its environs

The Meteorological Department reports that Nairobi and the surrounding counties will experience sunny intervals in the morning and afternoon. However, there will be showers over a few places on Wednesday, January 1, in the afternoon.

The affected areas include Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi.

Throughout this period the nights will be cloudy with temperatures ranging between 11°C and 28°C.

In the Northeastern region, counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo will experience sunny intervals in the morning and in the afternoon.

The nights will be partly cloudy.

Minimum temperature will be 17°C but this will rise up to 37°C.

South-eastern lowlands

Counties in this region include Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties as well as inland parts of Tana River County. These regions will experience sunny intervals in the mornings and in the afternoons.

However, there will be showers over a few places on Wednesday, January 1, in the afternoon.

The nights will be partly cloudy.

Temperature will range between 14°C and 31°C.

Coast

The Coastal region will experience sunny intervals in the mornings and in the afternoons.

The nights will be partly cloudy.

Counties in this region include Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties as well as coastal parts of Tana River County.
