The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued an advisory warning Kenyans of heavy rainfall as 2025 comes to an end. In the alert issued on Friday, December 26, 2025, Kenya Met stated that heavy rain is expected in parts of the country from Saturday, December 27, to Tuesday, December 30, 2025.
The rainfall is expected to be moderate to heavy, with a moderate probability of occurrence (33% to 66% chance).
Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rainfall
According to the advisory, heavy rainfall of more than 20mm within 24 hours is expected in parts of the southeastern lowlands on December 27, 2025.
The rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm within 24 hours and spread to parts of the highlands west and east of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the southern parts of the Coastal region on December 28 and 29, 2025.
At the same time, the weatherman predicts that the intensity will reduce on December 30, 2025.
13 Counties Likely to Be Affected
The counties listed as areas of concern include Migori, Homa Bay, Kisii, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Nairobi, Kericho, Bomet, the southern parts of Kitui, Taita Taveta, and Kwale.
Kenya Met has advised residents in the affected areas to remain alert and watch out for potential flooding, especially in low-lying areas, flood-prone zones, and along riverbanks. The department noted that updates will be issued promptly should there be any changes to the forecast.
The advisory has been shared with key government institutions, including the Presidency, the Cabinet Secretary, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, the Principal Secretary, the State Department for Environment and Climate Change, the National Intelligence Service, and the Kenya Red Cross.

Other recipients include the Kenya Maritime Authority, the Kenya Ports Authority, the Kenya Airports Authority, the National Disaster Operations Centre, the National Disaster Management Unit, the media, relevant government ministries, the Council of Governors, and County Directors of Meteorological Services (CDMs).
In reaction, the Kenya Red Cross issued a statement on the heavy rainfall advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department, urging the public to stay informed and take the necessary precautions.

Negative Effects of Heavy Rainfall
- Flooding: Excessive rainfall can cause rivers to overflow, resulting in flash floods that damage homes, roads, and bridges.
- Loss of Life and Injuries: Floodwaters pose serious safety risks, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
- Destruction of Property: Homes, businesses, crops, and livestock may be damaged or destroyed by floodwaters.
- Disruption of Transportation: Flooded roads and washed-away bridges can hinder movement and delay emergency services.

- Landslides and Mudslides: Saturated soil increases the risk of landslides, especially in hilly and mountainous regions.
