Professor Leah Marangu made history in 1996 when she became the first Kenyan woman to be appointed vice chancellor of Africa Nazarene University (ANU), just two years after its founding.
At the time, the university had only 62 students and a handful of makeshift structures under her visionary leadership.
Later, ANU grew into a modern institution with a student population exceeding 4,000, establishing a legacy of academic excellence and empowerment that continues to inspire generations of learners.
Early Life and Education
Born and raised in South Imenti, Leah initially dreamed of becoming a nurse.
After completing her studies at Kaaga Girls’ High School, she trained as a public health nurse and midwife at Maua Methodist Hospital and worked briefly at Meru and Nkubu Hospitals.
A move to the United States with her husband, however, interrupted her nursing ambitions.
Denied entry to further nursing programs because she was married, Leah shifted her focus to home economics. This field allowed her to remain connected to healthcare through nutrition and preventative care.
She pursued undergraduate studies at Olivet Nazarene University and continued with a postgraduate degree at Northern Illinois University.
Her thirst for knowledge led her to Iowa State University, where she earned a second degree in environment and home management, followed by a doctorate in home economics in 1975.

Her influence extended internationally when she received a Fulbright Scholarship in 1989, during which she served as a visiting professor at Central Michigan University until 1995.
Back in Kenya, she played a key role in higher education governance as a founding member of the Commission of Higher Education (now the Commission for University Education) and as a member of the task force that established Egerton University.
