Assistant Inspector General of Police Issa Mahamud is the current Nairobi Regional Police Commander, having assumed office in March following a reshuffle within the National Police Service.
Mahamud took over the role after swapping positions with George Seda and was officially introduced to Nairobi’s sub-county police commanders during a handover meeting held around March 13.
Issa now oversees security operations in the capital, one of the country’s most critical policing regions due to its economic importance and complex urban crime challenges.
Education Background
Issa Mahamud holds a Diploma in Crime Management and Prevention from Kenyatta University, which he obtained in 2009.
He has also pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree through the University of London.
Mahamud’s academic background complements his policing experience, particularly in areas of crime prevention, investigations, and public safety management.

Mahamud has risen through the ranks of the National Police Service, serving in command positions across the country.
Before his appointment to Nairobi, Issah served as Western Regional Police Commander, a role he assumed in March 2025 after being promoted from West Pokot County Police Commander.
Earlier in his career, he held several positions, including:
- County Police Commander in Machakos
- County Police Commander in West Pokot
- Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) in Kabete
He also served in the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) as a Staff Officer Operations, where he was involved in counter-terrorism operations and investigations, particularly in Nairobi.

Mahamud’s Achievements
Mahamud has risen through the ranks to command positions, serving as County Police Commander in Machakos and West Pokot before being promoted to Western Regional Police Commander in March 2025.
In March, he was appointed Nairobi Regional Police Commander, a move that reflects recognition of his ability to manage complex security environments.
In Nairobi, Mahamud has led major anti-crime operations targeting organized gangs and urban crime networks.
The efforts resulted in the recovery of hundreds of stolen items, including mobile phones, laptops, and electronic accessories, as well as the arrest of multiple suspects.
Issah has also overseen security planning for high-profile international events, including the Africa Forward Summit in May.
Mahamud’s experience in the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), where he served as Staff Officer Operations, contributed to counter-terrorism operations and investigations.
