The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued an advisory to all transit drivers following a failed, brutal vehicle-hijacking attempt in Mtito Andei.
In a statement by the detectives on May 7, drivers importing transit vehicles have been urged to remain vigilant amid ongoing violence incidents along major highways.
According to the DCI, on May 6, a driver transporting a Subaru Impreza from Mombasa was cornered near the Mutomo area in Mtito Andei.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is urging drivers transporting newly imported transit vehicles to remain vigilant amidst cases of robbery with violence incidents along major highways. Earlier yesterday, May 6, 2026, a driver transporting a Subaru Impreza from Mombasa to Kampala fell into a treacherous trap near the Mutomo area in Mtito Andei,” part of the statement read.
In a premeditated move, the driver was approached by a motorcycle that emerged from the bushes, with two passengers blocking the way, according to the detectives.
Upon blocking the way, the suspects pretended to need assistance from the driver, feigning that the passenger was a disabled person on crutches.
To assist the said disabled passenger, the driver alighted the vehicle, and one of the suspects took out a firearm and proceeded to threaten the driver.
Report by the DCI indicated that the suspects were attempting to hijack the driver’s vehicle and that, in return, escalated into a chaotic struggle.
Being overpowered, the suspects forced their way into the vehicle and assaulted the driver in an attempt to seize complete control of the vehicle.
However, as the struggle continued, the firearm was discharged, fatally wounding the suspect who initially had pretended to be a person with disability.
Following the incidents, the other suspects fled the scene of the incident, leaving behind their accomplice and an injured driver.

An immediate investigation was launched by the officers following leads to trail and apprehend the remaining suspects who had fled the scene.

DCI Advice to Drivers
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has warned drivers of falling prey to the deceptive tactics that are employed by the organized criminals, citing that the criminals have now turned to disguising themselves as vulnerable.
Further, drivers have been advised not to stop for unknown individuals on the road at any time during their travels.
In addition, the DCI has called upon drivers to report such an attack instead of directly intervening in the situation to avoid casualties and to remain alert to potential staged distress situations.
Drivers have also been encouraged to ensure that the vehicle doors remain locked and maintain controlled stops when necessary.
