Guinness World Records (GWR) has stated that it has yet to receive the required evidence to consider environmental activist Truphena Muthoni’s 72-hour tree-hugging attempt for certification.
The clarification came after a social media user by the name Maasai questioned why GWR had not acknowledged Muthoni’s attempt.
“So guys you’re not recognizing Truphena Muthoni after breaking the world record of 72hrs of hugging a tree,” Maasai asked.
In response, the organization stated that it looks forward to receiving the evidence of Truphena attempt.
“We look forward to receiving the evidence,” Guinness World Records replied.
Environmental activist Truphena Muthoni aimed to break her own 48-hour record by attempting to hug a tree for 72 hours.
She began this challenge on Tuesday, December 8, 2025, at 12:20 p.m., and people in Kenya and around the world are eagerly awaiting her to complete the milestone.
Her latest attempt to raise awareness of indigenous trees, indigenous communities, and inclusivity for persons with disabilities.
She also undertook a three-hour blindfold exercise to experience life with visual impairment.
How Guinness World Records Are Approved
Guinness World Records (GWR) requires official evidence to verify any claimed record, with submissions assessed by its trained Records Management Team and Category Specialists.
Applicants for new or existing record titles must provide detailed information, including what they aim to achieve, how and where it will be done, and supporting links or documentation.
If you are applying, you must provide the organization with as much information as possible, including:
- What do you want to achieve
- How, where, and why you want to achieve it
- Any links that may help our team to understand your proposal.
Once a record proposal is accepted, GWR provides guidelines and an evidence checklist, which applicants must follow carefully. Insufficient or incomplete evidence can lead to the rejection of a record attempt.
All evidence must be uploaded directly to the applicant’s GWR account and cannot be submitted via file transfer sites, email, or post.
Files must be uploaded individually, in English where possible, and with clear, descriptive labels. Video evidence larger than 1GB should be broken into smaller segments.
GWR stresses the importance of organization and completeness in submissions.
Applicants are advised to ask questions well in advance, as responses from GWR can take up to two weeks.
Proper documentation and adherence to the guidelines are essential for a record attempt to be verified successfully.

Video Evidence Requirements
Complete video footage of a record attempt is essential, as it allows the Records Management Team to adjudicate the attempt and verify details provided by independent witnesses.
What it includes:
- The video must capture the entire record attempt from start to finish, regardless of its duration.
- For ‘longest marathon’ attempts, it may be necessary to change batteries or tapes. In such cases, a second camera should film while the first is not running.
- For attempts lasting more than one hour, significant moments should be marked, with a list of timestamps provided, if possible.
- The camera must clearly focus on the record attempt so it can be accurately observed and judged.

- The video must show the measurement of the record, such as participants being counted, the weighing process of an item, or a running tally of actions (e.g., push-ups).
- All parts of the attempt relevant to the record guidelines must be included. For some attempts, such as large food items, this includes preparation before the official measurement.
- A brief introduction at the start of the video is recommended, stating the name of the participant or organisation, the application reference number, the record being attempted, and the independent witnesses present.
- Background music should be removed so that all audio from the attempt can be clearly heard.
- Where possible, film in landscape format, particularly when using a phone.
