The Nguni ward MCA Jeremiah Mutua has requested the government to consider expediting relief food to Mwingi in Kitui County.
Mutua argued that with the schools open, children would have a tough time concentrating in school with empty stomachs.
“I plead with the national, the county government and any NGO to intervene and salvage the situation. Most children have nothing to eat at home, but if they would be sure that they will eat in school, it will be a relief even to the parents,” Mutua said.
Mutua further noted an increase in school dropouts in such matters of hunger issues.
He added that as it is the third term, relief food would really help the students.
“This being the shortest term, I plead for food relief in schools,” he added.
Parents have also complained of the prolonged drought that has led to consumption of unhealthy food, begging for help.
The Nguni MCA further narrated of two people including a school-going child had dying after eating poisonous cassava.
The two had died on the way to the hospital.
The people in Kitui have resulted in scrapping any available food to curb the hunger caused by the prolonged drought.
The area MP in efforts to reduce the struggles had donated food to struggling families which didn’t go a long way.
Mutua expressed his growing concern for the well-being of his people.
“The extent to which hunger has deepened its roots is worrying,”
“As we wait for the rain, the government should step in and help locals,” Mutua added.
