The Kenya National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetang’ula, has today, December 4, 2025, during the National Assembly proceedings, addressed the persistent social media rumours about the death of Kwanza Member of Parliament Ferdinard Wanyonyi, confirming that the legislator is alive and receiving specialized treatment in India.
Wetang’ula told MPs that he had personally spoken to Wanyonyi on the phone in the past few days.
“I want to confirm to this House and to the country that the Member for Kwanza is alive. I have spoken to him myself while he is undergoing treatment in India,” the Speaker said.

The address drew applause from members on both sides of the political arena.
The Ford-Kenya lawmaker was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Nairobi Hospital in late November 2025 after his health suddenly deteriorated, as close family friends said the MP had been battling a serious illness that required advanced medical intervention unavailable locally.
After nearly a month in Nairobi hospital, doctors recommended that Wanyonyi be flown to India for further treatment.
News of his critical condition triggered an outpouring of messages of goodwill on social media, with Kenyans from different parts of the country holding prayers and candlelight vigils in parts of Trans Nzoia County.
Unexpectedly, unverified reports claiming that Hon. Wanyonyi had succumbed began circulating widely in the last 48 hours, on WhatsApp groups and X (formerly Twitter), causing distress to his family and constituents.
The rumours gained widespread attention after anonymous accounts shared a fake obituary featuring the MP’s photo.
Some posts had alleged that political rivals in the Kenya Kwanza alliance were only concealing the news to avoid by-election complications in the constituency, as it has a high voter turnout.
Former deputy president and DCP party leader, Rigathi Gachagua, was among the leaders who sent Wanyonyi get-well messages last week.
Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah also issued statements wishing the second-term MP a speedy recovery.

Speaker Wetang’ula urged Kenyans to avoid spreading unverified information that causes unnecessary panic.
“This House stands in solidarity with the family of our colleague. Let us continue praying for his full recovery instead of peddling falsehoods,” he said.
Wanyonyi, a close ally of Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka and a key figure in Ford-Kenya, was re-elected in 2022 on a Kenya Kwanza ticket after defeating former Deputy President Moody Awori’s son, Ken Awori.
His illness had raised speculation about the political future of Kwanza, a constituency seen as pivotal in the 2027 Trans Nzoia elections.
Wanyonyi’s family spokesperson, together with Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny, confirmed that the MP is responding well to treatment in New Delhi and is in stable condition, easing the pressure and panic that had engulfed some citizens.
