US ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman is today expected to meet local leaders in Kisumu county.
Whitman will also meet with US Embassy staff leading critical US programs and investments within the area.
“Happy to fly to Kisumu this morning”.
“Looking forward to a great day meeting local leaders,” she tweeted on Tuesday.
The agenda of the meeting is however yet to be known
Her visit comes after the United States urged its citizens to monitor local media for updates, avoid crowds and demonstrations as well as be aware of their surroundings in Kisumu county.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the Embassy has imposed movement restrictions on personnel in Kisumu.
The State Department reminds US citizens of the continued need for sustained vigilance,” the statement read.
Days later the US government defended its decision to issue a security alert to its citizens against visiting Kisumu during elections.
The US Embassy in Nairobi said alerts of this nature to American citizens are common ahead of elections throughout the world.
Kisumu leaders protested the move by the US government saying it would have scared investors from the city
Whitman replaced Kyle McCarter who left in January 2021.
