Mohammed Nyaoga, EBS, SC, is a prominent Kenyan legal expert and corporate leader currently serving as the Chairman of Absa Bank Kenya PLC, a role he assumed on October 1, 2025.
With over 40 years of experience in the legal and corporate field, he is recognized as a leading authority in corporate governance, banking law, and commercial litigation.
Educational Background
Mohammed Nyaoga was raised in a modest environment in Kitutu Chache North constituency, Kisii County, Kenya. He grew up in a large family of nine siblings.
After his mother passed away, his father remarried, increasing the total number of siblings to 17 and is now still alive at the ripe age of 97 years.
He earned both his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of Nairobi.
Nyaoga later attended the Kenya School of Law, where he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Law and was admitted to the Bar in 1985.

In addition, the legal expert enrolled at the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, where he earned a certificate in Bank Governance.
He is a Certified Public Secretary (CPS) and a Certified Company Director.
Mohammed has received advanced training from the American Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commonwealth Association of Corporate Governance.
Mohammed Nyaoga’s Career
On October 1, 2025, he officially took over the mantle of Absa Bank Kenya PLC as Board Chairman, succeeding Charles Muchene after joining the banking giant initially as an independent non-executive director in August 2025.
Appointed in March 2025 as the Chair of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Appeals Panel, he leads the Disclosure and Access to Information (DAI) Appeal Panel, acting as the final arbiter for the bank’s disclosure disputes.
He is a Senior Founding Partner at Mohammed Muigai LLP, where he specializes in corporate finance, public procurement law, and commercial litigation.
He previously served two consecutive four-year terms from 2015 to June 2023 as Chairman at the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).
In 2023, he chaired an external panel of experts in Washington to review the governance of central banks globally, showcasing his prowess as an International Monetary Fund (IMF) Expert.
Between year 1990 and 1992, Nyaoga served as a lecturer in Business Law, at the United States International University (USIU) as well as teaching Public Procurement and Accounting Law, (Masters’ Programme) at the University of Nairobi (UoN) between 2013 and 2014.

Nyaoga previously served as the Chairman of Ecobank Kenya and has held directorships at Telkom Kenya.
His past roles in public service include Vice-Chairman of the Law Reform Commission, Chairman of the Mining Licences Task Force, and Director of the Capital Markets Authority.
