Veteran journalist John Allan Namu the founder of African Uncensored, on Tuesday, October 24, praised his employee, Roselyn for making organic fertilizers.
Namu noted that Roselyn uses organic waste generated from the company’s kitchen for composting and the creation of organic fertilizer.
In his statement, the renowned journalist noted that Roselyn also uses organic remedies to control pests in the kitchen garden.
“When pests attack the crops, she uses natural remedies like vinegar to keep them away. Great for a kitchen garden, but tough to do at scale,” he noted.
Further, Namu revealed that Roselyn, who majorly takes care of their office decided to start growing different vegetables for them in mid 2022.

Roselyn Has Kept Entire Office Safe
He celebrated her saying that she was different from other Kenyans who use harmful pesticides for their agri-businesses.
“Here’s why Roselyn is both our heroine and increasingly, an exception to the toxic business farming in Kenya,” Namu noted.
According to him, Roselyn’s initiative is one that has kept them safe from hazardous pesticides.
“Not only has this been a significant cost saver for all of us, but Roselyn has kept us safe from highly hazardous pesticides,” he added.
Pesticides are widely used in agriculture and pest management, but they can have significant negative impacts on human health and the environment.
Notably, some pesticides are highly hazardous and can cause acute or chronic poisoning, cancer, and other serious health problems.
Namu further noted that Biopesticides are safer for use on food crops but are more expensive than the more widely used pesticides containing hazardous active ingredients.
However, he added that the biopesticides are more expensive to purchase per hectare and wouldn’t be a farmer’s natural choice as there are only less than 2% of the same in Kenya.
Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs)
According to research by the Route to Food Initiative, global pesticide consumption is over 4 million Tonnes per year and is still rising.
Overuse and misuse of pesticides can result in poisoning incidents, suicides, chronic diseases, and contamination of food, water, and soil.
Highly hazardous pesticides (HHPs) are a class of pesticides that cause disproportionate harm to the environment and human health.

Moreover, HHPs are often more toxic to humans and other animals than other pesticides and can persist in the environment for extended periods of time.
Notably, HHPs are often used in developing countries, where there is less regulation of pesticide use.
Although Pesticides are important tools for pest management, they should be used carefully and responsibly.
As such, HHPs should be avoided whenever possible.
