Kenyan chef Joy Nyawira has joined the Embassy of the Netherlands in Nairobi as the Residence and Private Chef to the Ambassador, taking up a role at the official residence.
In her new position, Nyawira is responsible for planning and preparing meals for the ambassador, visiting dignitaries, and events at the official residence.
Her work takes her into a fast-paced kitchen environment, where she combines skill, creativity, and precision to meet the expectations of high-end guests.
Nyawira described the role as both demanding and fulfilling, noting that it places her at the centre of a busy kitchen where she caters to high-level guests and official functions.
“I’m honored to join the embassy team in Nairobi as the Residence and Private Chef to the Ambassador. My role keeps me in the heart of a fast-paced commercial kitchen, where I plan and prepare meals for the Ambassador, visiting dignitaries, and official residence events,” stated Joy.

Joy Nyawira said her love for cooking stems from her creativity in the kitchen and from trying different foods from around the world as she continues to improve her skills.

Nyawira noted that she is currently working on new dishes for upcoming residence events and developing a refreshed menu that blends innovation with familiar, comforting meals.
“What drives me most is the creative energy of the kitchen. Having a boss who’s eager to taste cuisines from around the world and gives honest feedback on what to improve pushes me to refine recipes and try bold new flavors every day,” said Nyawira.
Outside the kitchen, Nyawira enjoys adventure travel, exploring new destinations, and expanding her culinary knowledge through cookbooks and cooking programmes, unwinding through swimming.

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kenya is based at 95 Riverside Drive in Nairobi and represents Dutch interests in Kenya and the wider region, including Somalia, Eritrea, and the Seychelles.
At the residence, the ambassador hosts visiting dignitaries and other guests, helping to build and maintain relations between Kenya and the Netherlands.
The current ambassador, Henk Jan Bakker, has been serving in Nairobi since 2024, and the residence also plays a role in diplomatic work, cultural exchange, and the hosting of official embassy events.
