National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has intercepted an overloaded matatu that was attempting to evade traffic law enforcement officers.
The matatu, crammed with passengers beyond its capacity, caught the attention of police officers who initiated a chase.
The driver, sensing the impending interception, swiftly diverted the vehicle onto an alternative route.
However, his attempt to outmaneuver the police met an unexpected hurdle as the route chosen had no exit, effectively trapping the vehicle and its occupants.
Faced with imminent arrest, the driver, conductor, and passengers made a daring escape on foot, abandoning the overloaded matatu.
NTSA Outlines Dangers of Overloading
In a statement released shortly after the incident, NTSA stressed the dangers of overloading vehicles, pointing out the need for compliance with safety regulations.
“This vehicle was found overloaded, and when intercepted by the Police, the driver diverted and took an alternative route. Unknown to him, the route had no exit,”
“To escape law enforcement, the driver and passengers abandoned the vehicle and ran away. The vehicle was towed to the police station for processing,” read the NTSA statement.
The abandoned matatu was subsequently towed to the nearest police station for further processing.
Public Appeal to Motorists
Meanwhile, The NTSA has issued a public appeal to motorists, urging them to exercise caution, particularly during adverse weather conditions such as flash floods.
“Motorists are advised to avoid driving through flooded areas, riverbeds, and other hazardous conditions to ensure their safety and that of their passengers,” read an earlier statement from NTSA.

Furthermore, the NTSA called upon passengers to take an active role in ensuring their own safety by speaking out against risky driving behaviors, including attempting to navigate through dangerous floodwaters.
In addition to cautioning against the perils of overloaded vehicles and hazardous driving conditions, the NTSA has provided a list of precautionary measures aimed at promoting road safety.
These measures included prompt removal of stalled vehicles, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, and ensuring proper visibility by using headlights, especially in low-light conditions.
Motorists have also been reminded of the importance of driving at a moderate speed after encountering water to allow brakes to dry effectively.
Additionally, they are encouraged to maintain full control of their vehicles by keeping both hands on the steering wheel at all times and regularly inspecting tires for wear and tear.
Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists are also advised to prioritize their safety by wearing bright clothing or reflective vests to enhance visibility, especially during periods of reduced daylight or adverse weather.
Road Safety Statistics
These directives issued by the NTSA come amid a concerning rise in road accidents, particularly during the rainy season.
According to NTSA data, the year 2024 has already witnessed a significant increase in road fatalities compared to the previous year.
From January 1 to April 1, 2024, road accidents claimed the lives of at least 1,189 individuals across the country, representing a troubling escalation from the same period in 2023, which recorded 1,129 fatalities.

Among the casualties, passengers accounted for a substantial portion, with 255 lives lost in road crashes during the specified period. Additionally, 98 drivers succumbed to fatal injuries sustained in accidents.
NTSA Director General George Njao attributed the surge in road accidents to factors such as speeding and drunk driving.
“NTSA emphasizes the need for concerted efforts to address these underlying causes, particularly in urban areas where accidents tend to occur frequently, often at night,” he said.
