Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has revisited his childhood days when he used to walk a distance of 7Km to his primary school.
In a statement, Amisi recalled how he would cover the distance four times in a day including during lunchtime when he used to run home for food.
But getting food for lunch was not always guaranteed even after getting home, according to his revelation.
He narrated having had to take cold strong tea at times when there was nothing else to eat at home.
“I remember how I used to trek barefoot a distance of 7km, four times a day; morning to school, lunch time to and from, just to take water and if lucky little food or just tea (yes cold strong tea),” he recalled.
At the time, the young Amisi was under the care of his grandmother who had assumed his custody following the death of his parents who left him orphaned at the age of nine years.
At times, Amisi could come back home in the evening and proceed to graze their three cows, goats and sheep, painting a picture of the background he was brought up in.
Nevertheless, his performances were outstanding and earned him recognition as a bright needy student at his school.

It was his performances that saw his then headteacher demand a yellow letter at Starehe Boys Center which usually caters for the education needs of bright but needy pupils.

When Amisi sat Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2,000, his performance was exemplary.
Out of the possible 700 marks in the seven subjects, the MP scored 590 marks to set a record he said went unbroken to date.
He would later proceed to the Starehe Boys Center for form one admission armed with a padlock only, as he put it and managed to get his first pair of shoes.
The rest, as the saying goes, is history. Two decades later, Amisi has grown to become an accomplished businessman and second-term MP for Saboti.

“I went to Starehe Boys Centre armed with a padlock only. I wore my first shoes in Starehe and the rest is history,” he wrote.
Inspired by his rise from a humble background and the scholarship he earned, the Saboti legislator has expressed his commitment to facilitate the studies of students in his constituency.
In his statement, Caleb Amisi urged parents and guardians to take advantage of the bursary program under his constituency’s CDF fund.
