Twin dormitory went down in flames on Wednesday evening September 28, at Ndagene High School in Imenti South, Meru County.
The fire, allegedly started by students, though cause is yet to be established, ate up property worth of Ksh 7 million after the roof caved in consuming the whole dormitory.
The school principal, Mr. Peter Njoroge stated that only a few students were able to save their belongings, as most of them were taking coffee after class hours.
Mr. Njoroge went on to add his suspicions about the students being behind the fire, as power was off in that part of the school at the time of the fire.
“The students had just left their classrooms and were drinking coffee. We are saying that it is the students because power was off in that part of the institution during the time of the incident. Investigations have started. Public property should be respected,” he said.
All the students, however, were safe, the teachers together with the students and other school workers battled the fire before the Meru County Fire department arrived and put it off.
This was the second school fire in the county after a dormitory was burnt down at Ruiri Girls in Buuri East, just as students returned from a one-week break on Tuesday.
The Meru Central KNUT executive Secretary Caxton Miungi urged students to remain calm, expressing his concerns on how much fire outbreaks happen within exam periods.
“Though the investigations are ongoing, we have seen scenarios where when exams draw closer, we experience school fires emerging. “Some wayward students who are afraid of examinations could be involved,” he said.
