Public Service Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria has asked President Willian Ruto a to reject a proposal by a section of Mount Kenya women leaders to eliminate members of of the outlawed Mungiki sect.
In a statement on X, CS Kuria urged his interior counterpart Prof. Kithure Kindiki to reject the suggestions arguing that President Ruto is a believer of the law and the Constitution.
“President William Ruto is a staunch believer in the rule of law and constitutionalism. Dear Prof Kithure Kindiki, kindly refuse the shoot to kill request by Mt Kenya elected women leaders,” said Kuria.
Further, CS Kuria explained all Kenyans are entitled to fair trials including the said Mungiki gang members.
“Everyone, even suspected Mungikis deserve fair trial and presumption of innocence. Michuki was right in many ways but not on this one,” added Kuria.
Kuria Dismisses MPs Demands
Kuria’s advice came after nine female Members of Parliament (MP) from the Mount Kenya region asked the government to crackdown the banned Mungiki gang group.
In a statement on Wednesday, November 22, the MPs stated that the group has resurfaced and taken over business and transport operations in the region.
Besides, the leaders alleged that some of the Mungiki members have been demanding money from business owners to allow them to continue operating.
“As mothers, we remember the terror, atrocities and chilling experiences that Mungiki unleashed within Central Kenya, we remember the fear, the terror, we remember the pain,” the MPs said in the joint statement.

Also, they threatened to lead protests in the region if the president fails to crack down the gang members.
Additionally, the MPs claimed that the gang leaders held meetings to recruit members in Murang’a county and are planning to hold similar meetings in Nyeri and Nakuru counties.
“We MPs drawn from the Mt Kenya region have noted with concern the recent attempts to revive and sanitize the activities of the outlawed Mungiki sect by clandestine forces aimed at destabilizing the peace and tranquility in our region and the nation at large,” the legislators said in statement read by Nyandarua Woman Representative Faith Gitau.
The legislators included Jane Kagiri (Laikipia County), Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika Town) and Ann Muratha (Kiambu County).
Furthermore, Irene Njoki (Bahati MP) Jayne Kihara (Naivasha MP) Rahab Mukami (Nyeri Woman Rep) and Pamela Njoki (Embu Woman Rep) were present during the press conference.

Maina Njenga-Ex Mungiki Leader
The MPs statement came a week after former leader Mungiki Maina Njenga said the group had stopped operations after his retirement.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s JK Live Show on Wednesday, November 15, Njenga said the gang does not exist and that he now operates a peaceful initiative.
“Some 40 years, I used to lead an organization called Mungiki. But, after 20 years, I retired. Mungiki is not there anymore, when you retire you retire with everything,” he said.
Furthermore, Njenga dismissed claims that the outlawed group planned attacks and violence within the Mt. Kenya region and across the country.
In addition, he explained that the outlawed sect was only being provoked by the police.
