Tensions between Israel and the United States have surfaced after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought clarification from the White House over reports suggesting the Trump administration may be engaged in undisclosed communications with Iran.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Netanyahu contacted senior U.S. officials after Israeli intelligence raised concerns that intermediaries may have facilitated exchanges between Washington and Tehran. The inquiry underscores Israel’s apprehension about a potential ceasefire initiative that could emerge before its stated military objectives are fully realized.
The issue was first reported by Axios on March 4th, citing two sources with direct knowledge of the situation. The report said Israeli intelligence assessments indicated the possibility that messages had been passed between Iran and U.S. officials, prompting Netanyahu to seek direct confirmation from the White House.
One source said Netanyahu personally asked whether any talks or indirect exchanges had taken place. U.S. officials denied the claim, telling Israeli counterparts that no such communications were occurring without Israel’s knowledge.

“The White House told Bibi that the Trump administration wasn’t talking to the Iranians behind his back,” one source said.
A U.S. official emphasized that coordination between Washington and Jerusalem remains close, noting that Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner maintain frequent contact with Israeli leadership. According to the official, both men speak regularly with Netanyahu, the head of Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, and its director David Barnea.
“They know we are not talking to the Iranians,” the U.S. official said, adding that coordination over the past month has been particularly tight despite previous diplomatic strains.
While denying direct engagement, U.S. officials acknowledged that Iran has attempted to send messages to Washington in recent days through intermediaries, including Gulf states and other regional actors. However, officials said the Trump administration chose not to respond.
“We treated these messages as bull****,” one U.S. official told Axios.
Separately, The New York Times reported that operatives linked to Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence attempted to reach out indirectly to the CIA via a third country’s intelligence service. The reported outreach allegedly included an offer to discuss terms for ending the conflict, though U.S. officials have not confirmed any engagement stemming from the contact.
In a briefing with reporters on Tuesday, a U.S. official stressed that neither Witkoff nor Kushner had spoken to senior Iranian figures such as Ali Larijani or Abbas Araghchi since the conflict began.

President Donald Trump also publicly dismissed the prospect of negotiations with Tehran. Writing on Truth Social, Trump stated that Iran’s military capabilities and leadership had been severely degraded and said any attempt to initiate talks was “too late.”
“Their air defense, Air Force, Navy, and Leadership is gone. They want to talk. I said ‘Too Late!’” Trump wrote.
The Israeli embassy in Washington declined to comment on the matter, while the White House did not respond to requests for clarification.
The episode highlights growing sensitivity within the Israeli government over diplomatic moves that could shape the trajectory of the conflict. While U.S. officials insist no secret talks are underway, Netanyahu’s outreach reflects broader concerns in Jerusalem about how and when the conflict could move toward de-escalation and who would control that process.
