Car owners and mechanics at a garage in Makuti, Kitale Town, are counting losses after a fire burned down two cars, shops, and tools of unknown value.
According to reports, the fire broke out on Wednesday, May 15, around 7 am and spread to engulf the entire garage.
Speaking to the media, the mechanics said several cars were affected by the fire that destroyed four of their stores.
Richard Wamalwa, one of the victims, mentioned that the affected buildings included a shop and a storage area containing mechanic’s tools.
“When we arrived, the garage was completely burned down. We have suffered significant losses. Four stores were burned; one of them contained goods for the shop, while another stored car engines. Additionally, cars near the affected store were also damaged by the fire,” he explained.
Cause of Fire
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, although some victims suggested that flammable materials in the garage could have contributed to the fire’s rapid spread.
“I received a phone call at 2 am, and when we arrived, we found a massive fire. We still don’t know how it started, but items like gas cylinders and machines using petrol could have fueled the flames,” said Seth Asembo, another victim.
The affected mechanics have urged the government to launch investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire.
In a video seen by The Kenya Times, workers are seen trying to salvage what remains of the shops and cars damaged by the fire.

Plea to Governor Natembeya
Local residents have appealed to the national government and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya to assist those impacted by the fire.
They expressed concern that much of their equipment had been destroyed, making it challenging to resume operations.
“Many things have been lost; these workers have been set back significantly. We are urging the county government to step in and help these individuals recover because they have lost everything,” said Benard Nyongesa.
