Safaricom founding Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and a director on the telco’s Board Michael Joseph has resigned.
In an official communication on Tuesday, August 8, the board announced his exit after being with the region’s leading telecommunications firm for over twenty years.
During his tenure at the listed company, the corporate guru served as Safaricom’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in various capacities.
“Michael has served in various capacities within Safaricom since 2000 including serving as General Manager, CEO twice, Director as well as chairman of the board,” the statement read.
Furthermore, he served as a member of the board and chaired various committees of the Board.

Michael Joseph was the founding CEO of Safaricom Limited.
While serving as CEO, he led the company to growth from a subscriber base of 18,000 in the year 2000 to over 17 million subscribers by his retirement in November 2010.

Through his leadership, Joseph transformed Safaricom into one of the most successful companies in East Africa.
Moreover, in his tenure, he spearheaded the launch of Safaricom and M-PESA Foundation, which have supported many projects throughout Kenya.
The two entities are key in sectors such as education, health, culture, and conservation.
Together with the late Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore, they launched the phenomenally successful M-PESA Foundation Academy.
Consequently, Michael foresaw other activities that have led Safaricom to its success.
“He has been integral to the important advances that Safaricom has made over the years including the issuance of Safaricom’s first Bond, the Initial Public offer and the branching out into Ethiopia,” the Board stated.

The board further disclosed that, Joseph has left the Chairmanship to focus on other ventures in his life, and passions in in matters of conservation and community service.
However, he will continue with his role as Chairman of Kenya Airways and service as director to various organization.
“The Board takes this opportunity to Thanked Michael for his dedicated service, sound advice and community service to Safaricom and wishes him the very best for the future,” the statement read.
