Former National Assembly Deputy Speaker, Farah Maalim, wants the government to reopen the Kenya-Somalia border in Wajir and Mandera counties to enable efficient cross border trade between the two countries.
The border points were shut down four years ago due to security reasons
The government had cited the border sections as key points of drug trafficking and smuggling of counterfeit goods .
Maalim, has called on the government to establish customs offices in the border areas to enable it levy taxes from cross border trade.
He says reopening of the border will support the integration in the greater Horn of Africa and boost the country’s economy.
Among the border points that were closed include Liboi, El-Wak, Diff and Hamuma in Wajir.
