A Makerere University student has warmed the hearts of thousands after graduating with a Degree in Bio-Medical Sciences despite his painful, life-threatening events in school.
The student, Ssebuganda Richard has been celebrated by thousands including Ugandan opposition leader and musician Robert Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, for his resilience and bravery.
Bobi Wine shared online that while Richard was in his second year at Makerere University, a teargas canister went off while he lay on his bed in the dorms and hit his right hand.
The impact of the canister cut off Richard’s four fingers and a large part of his palm, resulting in painful and depressing episodes in the following years.
While the incident affected his social life and education, Richards still had to undergo eight surgeries, moving from one hospital to the next for different procedures.
Still, he did not give up on his education.
“He went through eight surgeries, followed by a very painful, depressing period. He lost a full academic year, moving between hospitals. Despite all this, he did not give up his studies. He resumed his studies,” Wine narrated.

Student Life and Dreams After the Teargas Incident
The incident sparked a desire in him to fight for human rights and advocate for good governance and would show up for protests and marches in Uganda.
He engaged and joined other activists including Boby Wine in the fight for justice and for other Ugandan nationals.
His passion led him to enroll for a law degree which he has been pursuing concurrently with his Bio-Medical Sciences degree.
“This incident charged him to even become a more impassioned activist for human rights and good governance. He enrolled for a law degree which he is currently pursuing.
“To say that we are proud of him is an understatement! Close to two years later, our legal team continues to push for justice for this comrade!” added Wine.
