At the time when there was a probe into the slain Foreign Affairs Minister Robert Ouko, former Kisumu Town East MP Gor Sunguh said several government officials wanted the investigations to stall.
Gor Sunguh chaired the Parliamentary Select Committee formed under the newly elected NARC (National Rainbow Coalition) government led by President Mwai Kibaki. Other notable members of the committee included Dr. Oburu Oginga, Joe Khamisi, Amina Abdallah, Sammy Leshore, Raphael Wanjala and Kiama Kilonzo.
The Gor Sunguh committee was formed because previous investigations under the Moi administration had failed to resolve the murder and were widely perceived to have been hindered or prematurely ended due to political interference.
Gor Sunguh Recounts Night Meeting with 6 Government Officials in Lavington
In a past media interview, the former legislator noted that no government had ever shown willingness to bring the Ouko case to closure.
“The perpetrators are on record, if at all there was any prosecution or interest in investigating this matter. I would rush to Nairobi to give them all the details I have, the documents and everything I’ve kept in mind. No government in Kenya has been willing. In Kenya, it’s not just the Ouko murder, justice often looks like a passing cloud,” said Gor Sungu.
He revealed that as he and his team were finalizing the probe into Dr. Ouko’s murder, he received a late-night phone call from a close friend inviting him to Lavington.
“One night I was called by someone whose call I could not refuse. I went to a house in Lavington and there I saw who is who,” said the former lawmaker.
Disturbed by the unusual timing of the meeting, the former MP took his bodyguard along and alerted his cousin, who was a senior security officer. He also informed his neighbour, a Deputy OCS, who provided him with additional officers and arranged for them to trail him for his safety.
“I took my bodyguard with me but also alerted my cousin, then Chief Inspector Otieno. My neighbour, now late, was a Deputy OCS in Kabete, and he gave me extra officers to accompany me and trail my car because I wondered why I was being called in the middle of the night at around 10 or 11 p.m., when most people were already asleep,” he said.
What Happened in the Meeting
He further claimed that the events of that meeting may have contributed to his decision to quit politics.
According to him, he was kept for more than an hour after midnight without anyone speaking to him. He said he was not offered anything, while the individuals present continued with their coded conversations.
“You know some communication can be verbal, some through expressions, not just words. There was no physical threat because some of them were my closest friends. I think it was instructions without words,” he added.

Gor Sungu revealed that among the six officials in attendance was a sitting top-ranking politician.
He also mentioned that the group included a former senior Treasury official and his influential businessman ally from the Rift Valley, a former MP who had served as an assistant minister, a prominent High Court advocate who is now serving as Senior Counsel, and a former banker.
The Parliamentary Select Committee, chaired by Gor Sunguh concluded its findings in March 2005, determining that Dr. Robert Ouko was murdered at State House, Nakuru, and that his body was later transported and dumped at the foot of Got Alila hill to stage a suicide.
