About the A8 Highways
The A8 highway is a vital segment of Kenya’s Northern Corridor, connecting Nairobi to Western Kenya and landlocked neighbours, including Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC.
Heavy congestion, frequent accidents, and holiday delays have long plagued it. A major upgrade will cover a total of 233 km across two linked segments under one Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project:
- Main A8 Route: Rironi → Naivasha → Nakuru → Mau Summit (175 km)
Primary northwest route through the Rift Valley via Gilgil and Nakuru City. - A8 South Route: Rironi → Mai Mahiu → Naivasha (58 km)
Steep escarpment descent via Maai Mahiu, which is notorious for heavy trucks and steep hills.
