Kenyans who pay monthly electricity bills have often raised concerns over high charges. Kenya Power has explained the reasons behind the bills and shared practical tips for reducing electricity costs without sacrificing comfort.
According to Richard Wida, Manager of the Commercial Cycle at Kenya Power, the first energy-saving tip is to switch to energy-saving bulbs.
“They may be more expensive initially, but they are cheaper in the long run. We encourage everyone to use energy-saving bulbs for lighting,” Wida explained.

Another key tip is to switch off appliances entirely when not in use. Wida explained that even when a TV is turned off with a remote, the red standby light still consumes electricity.
“Switch it off at the socket completely if you don’t need it. That will save you power,” he added.
Wida also stressed the importance of using energy-efficient appliances, such as clean cooking devices with energy-saving coils.

When buying new appliances, consumers should check the power rating, which indicates how much energy they will consume. Often, appliances with lower energy ratings cost more initially but save money in the long run.
For households away from home for extended periods, such as one to three months, Wida recommends switching off fridges and deep freezers completely, especially if they are empty.
Other Practical Tips for Lowering Electricity Bills
However, when at home, these appliances should remain running, as they are designed to self-regulate energy consumption.
In offices, automated lighting systems also help save electricity. Lights turn on when someone enters a room and switch off automatically when there is no movement, helping to control energy usage and reduce bills.
“Energy is expensive and needs to be saved. Whenever you don’t need it, switch it off. This simple practice can significantly reduce your electricity bills,” Wida said.
Additionally, Kenya Power’s Manager of the Commercial Cycle also noted that several electrical appliances, such as fridges and most household appliances, operate most efficiently when used optimally. For example, a refrigerator works better when it is fully packed. Empty spaces in the fridge still need to be cooled, which increases power consumption.
He further explained that this is the reason why fridges and deep freezers come in different sizes, allowing you to choose one that suits your household’s needs.

If a fridge is almost empty or half-packed, it will waste energy cooling the air inside.
However, if it is adequately packed, it can maintain the cold for more extended periods, reducing energy consumption.
