The National Assembly speaker Moses Wetangula has said that a degree is not a requirement for one to be a cabinet nominee.
On Tuesday October 18, defending the Public Service, Gender and Affirmative action cabinet nominee Aisha Jumwa, the chair of the Committee on appointments said a degree was not mandatory.
“There is no requirement to have a degree to be nominated to be a Cabinet minister,” Wetangula said.
A section of MPs in the vetting committee raised questions about one of Jumwa’s Executive master’s degree from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
“If Hon. Aisha brings degrees that are not degrees, the consequences are known.” Wetangula added.
Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi during the vetting asked for clarification on Jumwa’s university certifications.
“I want to bring to your attention I just happen to lay my hands on the degree certificate that was tendered by my friend Aisha Jumwa. This must be clarified even by the University perhaps. Mr Speaker on the face of it, this is a degree certificate, I just want to be guided. It requires further clarification either from the nominee or university whether this is a certificate course or an executive Master of Leadership and governance,” said Wandayi.
Public Service, Gender, and Affirmative action cabinet nominee in response to Wandayi said it was just a mere short course certificate, not a master’s degree certificate.
