The Kenya Power and Lighting company (KPLC) has explained why most Kenyan households experience power outage when it rains.
In a statement on Monday, April 29, Kenya Power in a rather canning tone stated that they don’t usually unhang power (In reference to unhanging clothes) when it rains.
KPLC then proceeded to detail the reason for blackouts when it pours both in words and pictorials.
“Hatuanuangi stima! Here’s a detailed explanation of the correlation between rain and unplanned power outages,” noted the power company.
Kenya Power Explains Blackouts
First, Kenya Power noted that heavy rains come with strong winds that sway the trees.
The branches of the trees touch and sometimes fall on electric lines, thence triggering a circuit breaker leading to power outage.
“Heavy rains often come with strong winds. Trees sway, branches touch and occasionally fall on electric lines, this triggers a circuit breaker leading to a power outage,” noted Kenya Power.
Additionally, the power company affirmed that it has taken measures to ensure its customers do not experience unplanned outages.
“We have taken precautionary measures to prevent unplanned outages,” said KPLC.
Further, Kenya Power called on members of the public to report any cases of fallen trees or tree branches near power lines by dialing *977# or calling 97771.
Kenyans React
While responding to the power company a section of Kenyans appreciated the explanation noting that it was useful as others decried not having power for a long period.
Kenny Kamburu said, “This is a great explanation.”
“Very nice, a good piece of information. I now Understand,” noted another X user.

X user Polly noted that power went out on Saturday, and they are yet to have it restored.
“We’ve had no power since Saturday till now yet no efforts to restore despite reporting on all your platforms.”
Derick Omondi said “Kindly inform your Muhoroni office to come assess the situation around Dr. Robert Ouko Primary School and Koru Soin Dam area. No power since midday yesterday.”
Kelvin advised the power company to carry out surveys and cut off all trees aligned that may cause such, noting that they should not be giving Kenyans excuses.
Marijan Meghan also asked the KPLC to restore power at Kahawa Wendani area in Nairobi.
“Turudishieni stima Kahawa Wendani tafadhali!” he wrote.
Other complained of weak poles asking why the company had not fully implemented the concrete poles project.
“Your poles are also weak. What happened to the concrete poles project?” noted Josh.

Rainy Season
Power outage is a common phenomenon experienced in the country when it rains with Kenyans blaming the KPLC.
Recently experienced rains have led to blackouts in different parts of the country, with some going on for days without being restored.
Also, the explanation by Kenya Power comes at a time when various parts of the country are experiencing heavy rainfall and flooding in extreme cases leading to deaths.
Residents have been left homeless and property destroyed following the heavy rains.
