Hotels, guest houses and lodgings in Kisumu risk closure over pests menace. Rats, bedbugs and mosquitoes have become rampant, causing alarm to Kisumu City residents. The pests are not just a menace in social amenities but have also spread to residential areas.
According to Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga, the premises operate in unsanitary conditions contrary to the Public Health Act, cap 242.
“The city department of Public Health conducted a rapid assessment and found that there is increase of mosquitoes, bed bugs and high infestation of rats and other insect vectors in most of the hotels, guest houses, lodging rooms and other dwelling areas within the city of Kisumu,” said Mr Wanga.

On Monday 6th, Mr Wanga issued a 14-day ultimatum to such outlets to control the insects and rodents, failure to which legal action will be taken against them. “Failure to comply with the requirements of this notice may lead to legal action instituted against you without any further communications,” said Mr Wanga.
He further advised that premises must move with speed and conduct thorough fumigation and indoor spraying using approved public health insecticides that will not endanger human life. They should also conduct de-ratting using the approved public health poisons.
