Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has described Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua as a very fortunate man.
Speaking in an interview on June 11, Kuria responded to questions about the relationship between President William Ruto and his DP Gachagua.
Kuria stated that Gachagua was performing more roles as compared to what Ruto did during the Jubilee regime. He explained that the DP chairs cabinet committee meetings and is in charge of their operations.
“The only role that was defined and executed for President William Ruto was Principal Assistant to the President when he served as Deputy President. The current deputy president is a very fortunate man,” he said.

“He chairs cabinet committees, and let me say, Rigathi Gachagua has done incredibly well, in management of cabinet committees. Remember I am in charge of performance, I look at how we are performing overall in different areas. All of the areas that are performing well is our cabinet process,” he added.

Kuria Describes Gachagua’s Responsibilities
“Remember our space, look at our fiscal space, look at the issues we are discussing here, even here, to get o1B my friend in a budget of 4 trillion, it is a song, you can’t get. So, the space of our development partners is very very important that they have to come in when we have pre-disasters and all that. All that is chaired by one very fortunate guy called Rigathi Gachagua the deputy president,” Kuria said.
In addition, Kuria highlighted the DP’s role in overseeing coffee, tea duties and also efforts his position in the government’s fight against drug and alcohol abuse.

Gachagua’s Selection as Ruto’s Deputy
He described Gachagua as a privileged man serving as the second deputy president under the 2010 constitution.
“He is the second one, we’ve only had one experiment. You know, to be the second deputy president because the others were vice presidents, is such an honor and such a great calling,” he said.
Kuria maintained that there were so many politicians campaigning to be Kenya kwanza running mate, but Ruto settled for Gachagua.
He mentioned names like Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, Kirinyaga governor Ann Waiguru and Lands CS Alice Wahome, among others.
“We came a long way in the then so called Tanga Tanga movement, there were so many of us, who were qualified, men and women, like Ann Waiguru, Alice Wahome, Ndindi Nyoro, J.B Muturi, Kindiki Kithure who could have qualified for that position,” he said.
“So again, the president you remember, most of the people were not even valuing Rigathi Gachagua, it is the president who said no, I want this guy,” Kuria said.
Kuria said he doesn’t have empirical evidence of any problem between the president and the deputy president.
However, he emphasized that Gachagua should be the one to bend backwards incase such differences arise.
“If there would be any, the burden of resolution, of that very fortunate man called the deputy president ought to bend backwards since he was picked almost through a lottery,” Kuria affirmed.
