The UK Embassy in Kenya has announced a new entry requirement for travellers visiting the United Kingdom for short stays of up to six months.
In a statement on December 29, the embassy said the rule will take effect on February 25, 2026, and apply to visitors who do not need a visa to enter the UK.
According to the embassy, travellers who fail to meet the new requirement will not be allowed to board their transport or legally enter the United Kingdom once the policy comes into force.
“If you do not need a visa to visit the UK for short stays of up to six months, you need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). From 25 February 2026 without an ETA you will not be able to board your transport or legally travel to the UK,” read part of the statement.
UK Embassy in Kenya Introduces Mandatory ETA for Short-Stay Visitors
An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) allows travellers to visit the United Kingdom for up to six months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business trips, or short-term study.
According to the UK immigration office, it will cost Ksh2,785 (£16) and must be applied for online or through the official UK ETA app.
Applicants are advised to avoid third-party websites that charge higher fees or imitate government services.
However, the ETA will not guarantee entry into the UK. Border officials still make the final decision on arrival.
The nationals who will be exempted from ETA, include those holding British or Irish passports or individuals with permission to live, work, or study in the UK.

Additionally, the embassy stated that every traveller must have their own ETA, including babies and children, though one person can apply on behalf of others.
With an ETA, travellers can stay in the UK for up to six months for tourism, family visits, business, or short-term study.
It also allows travel for up to three months under the Creative Worker visa concession, participation in permitted paid engagements, and transit through UK airports if passing through border control.
However, an ETA does not allow travellers to stay longer than six months, take up regular paid or unpaid work, claim public benefits, live in the UK through frequent visits, or marry or register a civil partnership.
However, the applicants have been warned that no refunds will be issued once an application is submitted.

What Is Not Allowed With an ETA
After applying, travellers will receive a decision by email within one day from UK Visas and Immigration, along with a 16-digit ETA reference number.
If no decision is received after three working days, applicants are advised to contact the immigration office.
The ETA is electronically linked to the passport used during the application and does not require a separate document when travelling.
It is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows multiple trips to the UK during that period.
