On Saturday, April 13, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center in Sydney, Australia, where a man went on a stabbing spree, resulting in the death of five individuals.
The attacker, who reportedly acted alone, was shot dead by a female police officer responding to the scene.
The incident occurred around 4 pm (06:00 GMT), a time where the shopping center was packed, causing chaos and fear among the people present.
Local media reported that hundreds of people were evacuated from the shopping center, as police and paramedics locked down the scene and assisted the injured.
Images and footage from inside the mall showed the male attacker, dressed in shorts and a sports jersey, chasing people while carrying a bloody knife.
Furthermore, the incident resulted in at least eight people being critically injured, including a mother and her 9-month-old baby.
Police responded swiftly, dispatching emergency services to the scene to care for the injured and ensure public safety.

Witness’ Report
The incident has since gone viral with videos being shared on social media showing shoppers running from multiple exits of the shopping center, while police helicopters can be heard overhead.
Two witnesses while speaking to 9 News said that they saw a baby and mother being stabbed.
“The baby got stabbed and the mum got stabbed, she came over with the baby and threw the baby in my arms.”
“We were holding the baby and trying to compress the baby. Same with the mother, trying to compress the blood with clothes from the stopping,” noted one witness.
A young woman who was inside the shopping mall when the attack started said she saw a woman lying on the ground in a shop.
“I didn’t see him properly, I was running, but it was just insane, it was insanity, I wasn’t expecting it,” she noted.
Sydney Police Report
New South Wales police assistant commissioner, Anthony Cooke, while speaking to local media confirmed that the attacker had been shot dead by an officer.
“She confronted the offender who had moved by this stage to level five.”
“As she continued to walk quickly behind to catch up with him, he turned to face her, raised a knife, she discharged a firearm, and that person is now deceased.”
Additionally, he assured the public that the attacker acted alone, dispelling concerns of a continuing threat.
“Preliminary investigations show this person has acted alone. I am content that there is no continuing threat,” Cooke said.
When asked whether the attack was an act of terrorism, he said that police have seen no evidence at the scene pointing to the possible motives of the attacker, but they are ruling nothing out.

Prime Minister of Australia’s remarks
The Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, expressed gratitude to the paramedics and police for their courageous response to the tragic event.
“Our hearts go out to those injured and we offer our thanks to those caring for them as well as our brave police and first responders,” Albanese said.
The incident has left the Sidney community in shock, and investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attacker’s actions.
