The government has promised Kenyans they will have their passport applications processed within a period of one week.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki on Wednesday said he had given instructions to ensure the current backlog of over 42,000 passports was cleared within the next 21 days.
The Immigration Department will thereafter start the issuing of travel documents within 7 days of application.
“To unlock the backlog within the Immigration department, I have directed that the 42,000 pending passport applications be processed within 21 days. Thereafter, all applications must be processed within 7 days,” said the CS.

The Interior Cs further said the backlog was due to the occasioned breakdown of the printing machine, promising emergency situations for applicants seeking education or health services will be prioritized.
“I plead for patience from all those seeking services at the Immigration department. Within 7 days, the faulty printing equipment will be fixed. 60,000 booklets were delivered last Friday and will be used to deal with the backlog of 42,000 passport applications,” said Kindiki.
